CAT's D3 Smart Attachments: Turning a Skid Steer Into a Grader, Dozer, or Backhoe
Updated: Oct 6
A standard grading blade, dozer blade, or backhoe attachment on a skid steer still works through the machine's existing auxiliary controls, buttons, and thumb rollers, which means an operator is translating between the attachment's actual function and whatever control scheme the machine happens to offer it through. CAT's Smart Attachments for the D3 Series skid steer loaders and compact track loaders take a different approach entirely: the attachment itself sends a signal to the machine, the machine recognizes it, and the existing joysticks reconfigure to match the attachment's natural control pattern. That's a genuinely different way of pairing attachment and carrier, not just a rebranded version of a standard tool.
Three Smart Attachments, Three Different Jobs
The Smart Grader Blade with Assist is a six-way blade available in two widths, the GB120 at 78 inches and the GB124 at 96 inches. Plug-and-play attachment recognition brings up a dedicated display screen showing percent-grade information, and the blade's Assist function holds a set cross slope automatically without the operator constantly correcting it by hand. It's also compatible with external grade control references including GPS, sonic, dual laser, and total station systems, which matters directly for any contractor already running machine-control grading on other equipment and wanting the same reference system to work across the fleet.
The Smart Dozer Blade with Assist, built at 92 inches, is purpose-built for cutting, moving, and fine-grading dirt, gravel, and sand, with the same Assist cross-slope holding feature and a display showing both main and side slope angles, including the ability to set and repeat specific angles across a grading job. The Smart Backhoe, model BH130, is arguably the most functionally different of the three: a single button switches the machine from travel to digging mode, and in digging mode the operator can choose between backhoe or excavator joystick patterns, whichever they're more comfortable running. The BH130 is also compatible with every CAT 3-ton mini excavator attachment, meaning augers, hammers, thumbs, and compactors you already own for a mini excavator can mount directly to it.
Smart Creep: The Feature Underneath the Attachments
CAT also built Smart Creep technology into the D3 Series, available on both the skid steer and compact track loader platforms and compatible with CAT cold planers and wheel saws in addition to the Smart Attachments above. Smart Creep senses the load on whatever attachment is running and automatically adjusts the machine's drive speed to keep it at the most productive rate, including automatically reversing briefly to let a stalled tool like a cold planer or wheel saw begin spinning again before re-engaging the material. For a contractor running attachment-heavy work across varied material, that's a real production-rate feature, not a comfort add-on, since a stalled or over-fed attachment is lost time on every single occurrence.
Smart Grader Blade with Assist: GB120 (78in) or GB124 (96in), automatic cross-slope hold, GPS/sonic/laser/total-station compatible
Smart Dozer Blade with Assist: 92in, cross-slope hold, settable/repeatable grade angles
Smart Backhoe (BH130): one-button travel-to-dig mode switch, backhoe or excavator joystick pattern, compatible with CAT 3-ton mini excavator attachments
Smart Creep: automatic load-sensing drive speed adjustment, also works with CAT cold planers and wheel saws
All compatible with any D3 Series skid steer loader or compact track loader
Who Actually Benefits From a Smart Attachment
A site contractor already running a D3 skid steer or CTL fleet for general earthmoving who occasionally needs grading, fine dozing, or utility trenching capability is the clearest fit, since a Smart Attachment avoids buying and maintaining a dedicated grader, dozer, or backhoe just for occasional use. The one-button mode switch on the Smart Backhoe in particular matters for a crew switching tasks multiple times a day on the same jobsite, where a standard attachment swap costs real minutes every time. A contractor running grading or trenching as the majority of their work, by contrast, is usually still better served by a dedicated machine built around that one task full-time; Smart Attachments are a versatility tool for a general fleet, not a replacement for dedicated iron on a specialist's primary workload.
Financing D3 Attachments With Your Fleet
BFC works with equipment financing for contractors nationwide, startups and established businesses alike, across credit profiles, and we regularly structure financing that covers a skid steer or compact track loader together with the attachments that make it genuinely versatile, including Smart Attachments, in one package rather than two separate purchases. As always, treat specific payment or rate figures as illustrative only until you apply, and confirm Section 179 or bonus depreciation strategy with your own tax professional.
