Develon, Doosan Bobcat, and Hyundai Construction Equipment: Three Companies Contractors Keep Mixing Up

4 min read

Few corners of the equipment industry cause more genuine confusion than the cluster of brands sitting around the names Doosan, Hyundai, and Develon. A contractor who hasn't followed the corporate history closely can be forgiven for assuming Hyundai Construction Equipment and the company now called Develon are the same business, or that Doosan Bobcat is somehow part of that same family. None of that is true, and getting it straight actually matters if you're trying to figure out where to get parts, who backs a warranty, or which brand you're actually financing.

Company One: Develon, Formerly Doosan Infracore

The company now branded Develon has a long and winding corporate history. It traces back to Chosun Machine Works, founded in 1937, renamed Hankook Machine Industrial in 1963, then Daewoo Heavy Industries in 1976 after a Daewoo acquisition. In 2000, Daewoo Heavy Industries split, with the construction equipment side becoming Daewoo Heavy Industries & Machinery, which was renamed Doosan Infracore in 2005 following an acquisition by Doosan Heavy Industries. In 2021, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group purchased a 35 percent stake in Doosan Infracore, and the company briefly operated as Hyundai Doosan Infracore before formally renaming itself HD Hyundai Infracore in 2023, adopting the brand name Develon for its equipment going forward and dropping the Doosan name from its machines entirely.

The key thing to understand: this is one continuous company that has changed names and ownership several times, not three or four different companies. Doosan Infracore and Develon are the same business at different points in its history, now majority-influenced by the HD Hyundai group, which itself rebranded from Hyundai Heavy Industries Group to align with its subsidiaries' new naming.

Company Two: Doosan Bobcat, a Genuinely Separate Business

Here's where the confusion gets worse before it gets better: when Hyundai Heavy Industries Group acquired its stake in Doosan Infracore in 2021, that deal specifically excluded Doosan Infracore's 51 percent stake in Doosan Bobcat. Bobcat, the compact equipment brand that makes skid steers, mini track loaders, and compact excavators we finance every day, stayed under Doosan Group's separate ownership and was never part of the HD Hyundai transaction at all. Doosan Bobcat is, and remains, a completely different company from Develon, despite both having carried the Doosan name at different points.

Company Three: Hyundai Construction Equipment, the Actual Third Party

This is the part most summaries get wrong, and it's the one that matters most to our customers: Hyundai Construction Equipment, the company that builds the HX-series excavators and HL-series wheel loaders we finance, headquartered in the Americas out of Norcross, Georgia, is not the same company as Develon, and the 2021-2023 Doosan-to-Develon corporate history did not rename Hyundai Construction Equipment into anything. Hyundai Construction Equipment is a long-standing, separate manufacturer that happens to share a parent naming convention with HD Hyundai Infracore because both ultimately sit under the broader Hyundai corporate family tree, the same way Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Heavy Industries are related but distinct businesses.

In plain terms: if you're financing a Hyundai HX300A L excavator or an HL960A wheel loader, you're financing equipment from Hyundai Construction Equipment, not from Develon, and not from Doosan Bobcat. Those are three separate manufacturers with three separate dealer networks, three separate parts supply chains, and three separate warranty structures, even though the overlapping names make that easy to miss.

Why This Actually Matters on a Jobsite

Mixing these three up has real, practical consequences. Order a part by walking into the wrong dealer because you assumed Develon and Hyundai Construction Equipment share a parts network, and you'll get turned away. Assume a Doosan Bobcat warranty claim routes through Hyundai Construction Equipment's customer service because of the overlapping Doosan history, and you'll waste a phone call. Tell a lender or an insurance adjuster the wrong manufacturer name on a claim or an application, and you create a paperwork headache that's entirely avoidable once you know these are three distinct companies.

What We Actually Finance

To be direct about where BFC fits into this picture: we finance Hyundai Construction Equipment's HX-series excavators and HL-series wheel loaders, and we finance Bobcat's full equipment lineup. We don't currently finance Develon-branded equipment. If your fleet runs Hyundai Construction Equipment machines, Bobcat machines, or both, you're covered. If you're shopping Develon equipment specifically, it's worth knowing upfront that it falls outside our current approved manufacturer list, so you can plan your financing conversation accordingly.

Whichever of these two brands you're running, the same ownership math applies: a financed machine builds equity and shows up as an asset on your books, while a rented one never does, no matter whose name is on the hood. BFC finances both Hyundai Construction Equipment and Bobcat machines nationwide, for startups and established businesses, on good credit or bad, and you're never forced to pay one loan off before financing the next machine your fleet needs.
