Rent vs. Own a Mixer Truck for Project-Based Concrete Work: When a Short-Term Rental Actually Costs More

A concrete subcontractor who normally has material delivered by a ready-mix supplier takes on a project where self-hauling makes more sense: a remote site, a supplier with limited capacity, or a job where controlling the pour schedule directly is worth the hassle. Renting a mixer truck for the duration of that one project is the obvious first instinct, and often the right call. But for a contractor who keeps finding themselves in this situation project after project, the rent-vs-own mixer truck financing comparison deserves a more honest look than just checking the daily rental rate against a loan payment.

Why Mixer Truck Rental Rates Run High

Mixer trucks are a more specialized rental asset than a general dump truck or excavator, which keeps rental rates for them meaningfully higher relative to their value than more commodity equipment categories. A short-term rental for a single project, especially a project lasting more than a few weeks, can add up to a meaningful fraction of a used truck's full value surprisingly fast. A contractor running the real numbers for a project that's going to need a mixer truck for two or three months, not two or three days, often finds the math is closer than expected to financing a used unit outright.

The Driver and Insurance Variable Rental Doesn't Solve

Renting the truck is only half the equation. A concrete contractor self-hauling for a project also needs a qualified driver and the right commercial insurance in place for the rental period, which is a real cost and logistical task whether the truck is rented or owned. Since that part of the equation doesn't go away with a rental, the actual marginal cost of owning versus renting is really just the difference in the equipment cost itself, which narrows the gap further once it's accounted for honestly.

When Renting Genuinely Is the Better Call

  • A true one-off project with no reasonable expectation of needing a mixer truck again within the next year or two

  • A short-duration pour, measured in days rather than weeks or months, where the daily rental rate hasn't had time to approach the cost of ownership

  • A contractor without an existing CDL driver available to run the truck, where adding a driver just for this one project doesn't make sense regardless of equipment cost

  • Uncertainty about whether the specific truck class or configuration needed for this project would be useful for the business's typical work afterward

When Financing Is Usually the Better Call

A contractor who keeps ending up in self-haul situations, even if each individual project looks like a one-off at the time, is the clearest signal that financing a used mixer truck instead of repeatedly renting one makes more financial sense. A used International HX or Freightliner 114SD mixer build, financed on a term that matches its remaining useful life, becomes a flexible asset the business can deploy on the next project that calls for it, rather than a recurring rental line item that never builds toward anything owned.

Financing a used unit specifically for this purpose also doesn't require matching the capacity of a full-time ready-mix fleet. A single, well-chosen used mixer truck, sized to the contractor's typical project scope rather than a large operator's daily-delivery volume, is usually the right-sized answer for a contractor whose core business isn't ready-mix supply but who self-hauls on a recurring basis.

Run the Comparison on Your Actual Project Pattern

The right answer here depends almost entirely on how often this situation actually comes up, not on any single project's numbers in isolation. A contractor who's rented a mixer truck for three different projects in the past two years already has enough of a pattern to run a real comparison: total rental spend across those projects against what financing a used truck over the same period would have cost, factoring in that the owned truck would still have value today.
